"Do you know what you don't know?
If you know that, you are wise but if you don't, you need to consider what you change! Education, learning & teaching, is the key."
To Whom It May Concern:
I would like to be a candidate for a teaching career with emphasis on English as a second language taught to Korean students. My goal is to share the knowledge I’ve gained over the years and help educate future generations. I’m currently in my final undergraduate semester at the University of Hawaii at Manoa majoring in Second Language Studies. My Bachelor of Arts degree will be conferred on May 11, 2013.
My teaching experience started approximately ten years ago when I voluntarily led Korean language instruction to American-born Korean children. These children understood some informal Korean dialogue from their parents and home environment but primarily spoke English with their siblings and outside the home. The education I provided gave these children the ability to comprehend the formal structure of the Korean language while expanding their vocabulary.
Related to the teaching, an exceptional experience was afforded me when the institution asked me to be in charge of developing materials, managing the school’s office and representing the school at functions in the local community. I attended meetings to review other schools curriculum and, in an official capacity, to share what the school I represented had to offer. I have also annually attended the Korean School Association (KSA) in Hawaii and in 2009 I received the KSA’s “Teacher of the Year” award.
I’ve always held a strong interest in teaching to improve communication and break down communication barriers. My generally proactive approach starts with teaching language learners effective language learning skills, e.g., how to listen smartly for comprehension, and then into overall speaking, reading, and writing. Since language is for communicating to each other, I’d like to teach and share my knowledge of language and culture, whether in English or Korean.
I would really appreciate hearing from you at your convenience. Thank you again for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Min Su Kim
